Trust Is Built Before the Pressure Hits

Strong working relationships make hard moments easier to navigate.

July 30 is International Day of Friendship. In the workplace, that doesn’t mean everyone has to be best friends. It doesn’t mean avoiding hard conversations or pretending every team feels like family.

But it does point to something important: relationships matter.

In mining, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and energy, the work is complex. The stakes are high. Deadlines shift. Conditions change. Problems come up quickly. When pressure hits, teams don’t rise to the level of their org chart. They rely on the trust they’ve already built.

Do people speak up when something isn’t right? Do they ask for help before the issue becomes bigger? Do departments share information, or do they protect their own corners? Do people assume positive intent, or do they jump straight to blame? Those patterns are built long before the stressful moment arrives.

Good leaders pay attention to the relationships on their teams. They create space for people to understand each other, challenge each other respectfully, and work through tension before it becomes a wall.

Friendship may not be the goal at work. But trust, respect, and connection absolutely are. Because when the pressure is on, people work better with people they believe in.
