A Reminder of What Matters

Life has a way of putting everything back into perspective.

A few days ago, I learned that someone I’d had the privilege of working with has passed away. News like that stops you in your tracks. We spend so much of our time focused on the next meeting, the next deadline, the next challenge, the next result. Those things matter. The work matters. Responsibilities matter.

But moments like this remind us that life is fragile, time isn’t guaranteed, and the things that matter most aren’t always the things that fill our calendars. The people we love. The relationships we build. The kindness we show. The way we make people feel. The time we take to listen, encourage, connect and be present.

As leaders, it’s easy to become consumed by performance, pressure and progress. But behind every role, title and responsibility is a human being carrying a life we may know very little about. Sometimes, leadership begins with remembering that.

Today, I’m feeling especially grateful for my family, my friends, the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with, and the moments of connection that can be so easy to take for granted. Life moves quickly. Perhaps the best way to honour that is to slow down once in a while, look around, reach out to someone who matters, and remember what’s truly important.
