You can’t buy culture. You build it — with trust and straight talk.
“Without a heart, we’re just a machine.”
That’s a Southwest Airlines mantra — and one reason they’re famous for creating a culture of communal accountability.
Here’s what that looks like: When you walk into a business where people feel empowered and trusted, you feel it. There’s energy, engagement, and ownership — from the front line to leadership.
When you walk into a business without it? You feel like you’re interrupting.
The business of business is people. So empower them. Build a culture where feedback flows both ways. Be clear, kind, and honest — with praise or criticism. Invite dialogue. Model it yourself.
A trusted colleague will tell you to your face what needs improving — not behind your back. Leaders should do the same. That’s how trust grows. That’s how accountability sticks.
And remember: Culture is intangible. It’s spiritual. You can’t buy it. You have to live it.
How’s your accountability culture holding up?
