Communicating a Message as a Leader

Ask the appropriate questions to validate communication

Ground Control to Major Tom, your circuits dead, there’s something wrong. Today’s topic (courtesy of Ziggy Stardust) is communication. Namely, assumptions, expectations and accountability.

Leaders delegate. Great leaders delegate clearly, with intention and by receiving feedback. Don’t assume your team has heard you, understood everything and has all the information they need to succeed.

Being intentional with your communication means being an active listener too. Give your team your full attention, ask clarifying questions so you understand their perspective and everyone gets on the same page. And be crystal clear on the expectations.

Finally, assign and receive confirmation for the accountability for the plan of action. Feedback to their questions or concerns should be specific, timely and actionable. Once everyone is clear, give them space to work things out. Micro-managing every element won’t get you out of the weeds.

This ends today’s post. Can you share with me what you understand from today’s topic?
