Leadership Lessons from a Canada Day Games Match

Sometimes the best leadership moments happen at home.
Canada Day in our house means family time — outside if the weather plays along. We’re an active family. Swimming, biking, running, and whatever new game the girls dream up. And yes — they love beating Dad.
But every year, these moments remind me that some of the best leadership lessons aren’t taught in a boardroom — they happen on a bike trail or in a backyard.
Flexibility. When the game changes, adapt quickly.
Resilience. Lose well. Win humbly. And come back ready to play again.
Encouragement. Celebrate effort, not just results.
Empathy. Everyone’s learning something — support that growth.
Whether I’m coaching a client or cheering for my daughters, these values matter. Leadership is about how you show up — for your team, and for the people who matter most.
And yes — no Canada Day is complete without Nanaimo bars. I won’t say how many I’ll have, but let’s just say I’ll be practicing restraint (another great leadership skill).
Wishing you all a safe, happy Canada Day.
