The Fall Equinox: Rebalance Before Q4

If everything is a priority, something is already out of balance.

The fall equinox is all about balance. Day and night are nearly equal, and for a brief moment, the year feels evenly divided. It’s a useful leadership metaphor as we head toward Q4.

By late September, teams are usually moving fast. Deadlines are closer. Budgets are tighter. Vacations are mostly behind us. Everyone has a lot on their plate.

That’s exactly when balance starts to disappear. Urgent work crowds out important work. Strong performers quietly take on too much. Managers spend all day reacting and very little time leading. Development, coaching, and recognition get pushed aside because there’s “no time.”

But imbalance has a cost. Teams can operate under pressure for a while. They can’t do it indefinitely.

So, before Q4 arrives, this is a good moment to ask: What are we overinvesting in? What are we neglecting? Who is carrying more than their share? What have we been calling a priority that probably isn’t anymore?

Balance doesn’t mean equal time for everything. It means making deliberate choices about where attention belongs. Strong leaders don’t just manage workload. They manage focus.

And sometimes the most productive thing you can do before the final quarter begins is stop, look at the whole picture, and put things back into proportion.
