The Leader Inside Every One of Us

Modern leadership starts long before the title.
In a TED Talk on “The Crisis of Leadership – and a New Way Forward,” Halla Tómasdóttir makes a point that really stuck with me: there is a leader inside every single one of us. That idea feels especially important right now.
For too long, we’ve treated leadership as something reserved for the person with the biggest title, the corner office, or the final say. But in today’s workplaces, that definition is too narrow.
Leadership shows up in the supervisor who notices when the team is burning out. The crew member who speaks up before a small issue becomes a big problem. The manager who listens before reacting. The colleague who chooses courage over silence.
Modern leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating the conditions where people feel safe enough, trusted enough, and respected enough to contribute their best thinking.
That matters in every industry, but especially in high-pressure environments like mining, construction, manufacturing, and energy, where the quality of communication can directly affect performance, safety, and culture.
The future of leadership won’t be built by louder voices or stronger egos. It will be built by people who are self-aware, collaborative, curious, and willing to step up before they are officially asked.
Because leadership isn’t just a role. It’s a responsibility. And it starts with each of us.
