The Leader Beside Me

Celebrating the woman who grounds and inspires me.
Today is my wife Jay’s birthday. A few weeks ago, on Mother’s Day, I wrote about the kind of leadership that doesn’t always get recognized: the quiet, consistent, behind-the-scenes leadership that holds people together. Jay is that kind of leader. But to be clear, she also has a well-earned title that reflects the work and talent she brings to the world. In her professional life, Jay helps support an organization committed to creating a better future for children and advancing equality for girls. At home, she brings that same care, purpose, and strength to our family.
She leads through her steadiness. Through her honesty. Through her intelligence, compassion, and ability to bring clarity when things feel complicated. She’s also the person who knows me best: the one who listens when I need perspective, challenges me when I need clarity, and has a remarkable way of saying the thing I need to hear, even when it isn’t necessarily the thing I wanted to hear.
In my work, I talk a lot about trust, accountability, empathy, and communication. I’m lucky enough to be married to someone who embodies those qualities every day — both personally and professionally.
Jay, you make our family stronger, our home happier, and my life infinitely better. You’re my partner, my sounding board, and, more often than I care to admit, the wisest leadership coach I know.
Happy Birthday, Jay. I love you.
