Don’t Underestimate a Good Laugh

A little lightness goes a long way in building strong teams
April Fool’s Day is a big deal in our house. Over the years, the girls and I have built up a bit of a tradition. Frozen cereal. Toothpaste in the middle of Oreo cookies. The occasional early-morning wake-up courtesy of a Bluetooth speaker and… questionable sound effects.
Nothing over the top. Just enough to catch each other off guard and start the day laughing. What I’ve come to appreciate is that those small moments do something bigger. They build connection.
At work, we don’t always make space for that. We stay focused. Productive. Professional. And those things matter. But when everything is all business, teams can start to feel transactional. The strongest teams I’ve worked with have something else as well — a sense of ease with each other.
It doesn’t take much:• a shared laugh in a meeting• a light moment on site• a quick story that breaks the routine
In some teams, it’s as simple as someone showing up to a meeting with an obviously oversized safety vest — nothing disruptive, just enough to get a reaction and reset the tone for a moment. Because trust is already there. Fun doesn’t build culture on its own. But it reinforces it.
