Leaders as Team Developers, Not Solo Performers

Strong leaders don’t just do the work—they grow the team.
Over the weekend, my daughters and I tackled some much-needed yard cleanup and planted a new flower bed. What started as a simple gardening project turned into a crash course in delegation, teamwork, and leadership.
At first, I found myself giving step-by-step instructions—where to dig, how deep, what goes where. But the real magic happened when I stepped back. I explained why spacing mattered, showed them once, then let them take it from there. They made mistakes, learned fast, and by the end, they were proudly showing off “their” flower bed.
It was a great reminder: leadership isn’t about doing every task perfectly—it’s about creating space for others to grow, make decisions, and take ownership.
At Nexus Coaching Professionals, this is what we coach technical leaders to embrace. Empowering teams, communicating clearly, and trusting others to deliver—not micromanaging—is where sustainable success begins.
And yes, I’m still working on delegating post-gardening cleanup. Progress, not perfection.
