Leading Through Summer Brain

When everyone would rather be outside, clarity matters more than ever.
There are days in the summer when you can feel the team’s attention pulling in different directions. Someone has kids home from school. Someone is leaving early for the cottage. Someone has family visiting. Someone is counting down to vacation. And honestly, on a beautiful long summer day, most people would rather be outside than sitting in another meeting.
That doesn’t mean people are lazy. It means they’re human.
Good leaders understand that motivation looks different in the summer. You may not get the same energy you get in January or September. People are balancing work with family, travel, weather, and the desire to enjoy a short season that never feels quite long enough.
The answer is not to push harder just for the sake of pushing. The answer is to make the work clearer. What matters most this week? What can wait? Where do we need focus? What does a good outcome look like?
In mining, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and energy, the work doesn’t stop because it’s summer. But leaders can still make it easier for people to stay engaged by reducing confusion, protecting priorities, and connecting the work to a purpose.
People don’t need more noise in August. They need clarity, trust, and a reason to stay focused.
