Respect The People Closest to the Work
A Labour Day reminder for leaders.
Labour Day is coming up this weekend. For many of us, it means one last long weekend before fall really begins. But it’s also worth remembering what the day recognizes: the people who do the work.
Strategies don’t build mines. PowerPoints don’t operate plants. Plans don’t pour concrete, maintain equipment, solve problems on the floor or get the product out the door. People do.
And very often, the people closest to the work understand things that leadership can’t see from an office or a spreadsheet. They know which process slows everything down. Which piece of equipment keeps causing trouble. Where the safety risk is developing. Which workaround everyone is quietly using. What customers are actually saying.
One of the smartest things a leader can do is ask: “What are you seeing that I’m not?” And then listen carefully to the answer.
Respect isn’t just thanking people for their hard work once a year. It’s valuing their experience. Inviting their perspective. Giving them the tools and training they need. Taking their concerns seriously. And making sure they know their contribution matters to the success of the entire organization.
This Labour Day, enjoy the well-earned break. And when everyone returns, remember: Some of your best leadership intelligence may already be standing on the front line.
