What Shouldn’t Come with You Into Q4?

A new quarter is a good time to stop carrying old weight.
October 1 feels like a fresh start. New month. New quarter. New targets.
But before adding another list of priorities, there’s a better question to ask: What should we stop doing?
Most teams don’t struggle because they have too few priorities. They struggle because new work keeps getting added while old work never goes away. The meeting that no longer serves a purpose. The report nobody really reads. The process created years ago for a problem that no longer exists. The approval step everyone complains about but nobody questions. The project that has quietly lost its business case.
Leadership isn’t only about deciding what matters. It’s also about having the courage to decide what no longer does.
Q4 is already a demanding quarter. Year-end expectations increase. Budgets tighten. People are thinking about holidays. Everyone’s calendar gets crowded.
So, before your team carries every Q3 habit into October, ask: What can we simplify? What can we stop? What can we delegate? What can we do differently?
Sometimes the best way to create capacity isn’t asking people to work faster. It’s removing work that doesn’t need to exist. New quarter. Lighter load. Better focus.
