Same Pool, Different Energy

What works for one team member won’t work for another. Adjust accordingly.
We’re heading out on a family road trip to the East Coast next week. Which means snacks, playlists, and a fresh reminder that leading people is not a one-size-fits-all game.
My daughters — twins — could not be more different. One is like a public pool on a hot summer day: loud, busy, full of ideas and questions and movement. The other? That same pool… but under a full moon. Quiet. Reflective. Still. You almost don’t want to break the surface.
Leading them through the same journey requires two completely different approaches. One needs a microphone and a dance party. The other wants time to observe and think. And yet, both need to feel seen. Heard. Valued. Involved.
Same goes for your team. Not everyone is motivated by the same incentives. Not everyone wants the mic. But everyone wants to matter.
Your job as a leader isn’t to treat everyone the same. It’s to treat them in a way that brings out their best. Even if that means switching soundtracks mid-drive.
