Start With Why

People don’t just follow instructions. They follow purpose.
Great leaders don’t just explain what needs to be done. They explain why it matters. That distinction is everything.
In the workplace, especially in high-pressure industries like mining, construction, manufacturing, and energy, leaders are often moving fast. There are targets to hit, problems to solve, safety protocols to follow, and deadlines that don’t move.
So, it can be tempting to lead with the task:
“Get this done.”“Fix this issue.”“Hit this number.”“Follow this process.”
But people are more engaged when they understand the reason behind the request.
Why does this matter?Who’s depending on us?How does this connect to safety, quality, performance, or the bigger picture?
When leaders start with why, they give people more than direction. They give them context. And context builds ownership.
A team that understands the “why” is more likely to think critically, speak up, solve problems, and stay committed when the work gets difficult. That doesn’t mean every conversation needs to become a speech. Sometimes it’s as simple as taking an extra minute to connect the task to the purpose.
Because leadership isn’t just about getting people to act. It’s about helping them believe their actions matter.
