Travel Stress

Writer: Ralph CochraneRalph Cochrane

Let’s talk about travel stress.

Not your lost luggage.

I want to talk about Air traffic controllers.

Every day, a controller at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (The busiest in the US) manages over 2,500 flights.

Through a rigorous training program, controllers are increasingly presented with stressful situations to find their ‘breaking points’.

The interesting part of this exercise isn’t watching them fail - as they all will eventually.

The instructors want to see how the controllers view and interpret their situations.

Trainees are ranked on:

Resilience

Stress-mindset

Adaptability

And Mental toughness

The critical predictors for future success after failure are twofold:

  1. Don’t beat yourself up.

  2. What did you learn from the situation?

We all will have stress in our lives.

As leaders, we should give ourselves the same permission to fail and leverage those moments for critical assessment as we would with our teams.

The air traffic controllers know they’ll crack. That’s why they have backup controllers.

Just like a good leader is there.

To help you return your seat to the upright position.
