Use the Winter Lull to Build Capability

Use the quiet months to invest in training and capability development.
The truth is, January and February can be some of the best months of the year for professional growth. The phones are a little quieter. The travel slows down. Customers aren’t yet demanding end-of-quarter miracles. The outside world is frozen, but inside organizations there’s room to breathe — if we’re smart about it.
Booking training, coaching, or development programs early in the year gives people something to lean into during a season that can otherwise feel heavy. It reinforces that the company is investing in them, not just extracting output. And for many teams in the North, having a reason to gather (even virtually) creates connection at a time of year when isolation is a real factor.
Capability development isn’t just about skill. It’s about energy. And January is when people need both.
