“MAY 2-4” FEELS LIKE A RESET BUTTON

Longer days, lighter moods, and a reminder that energy matters at work too.

For a lot of Canadians, Victoria Day Weekend (a.k.a. May 2-4) feels like the unofficial start of summer.

Cottages reopen. BBQs come out. Garden centres suddenly get busy. And someone inevitably tries sitting on a dock wearing a bikini even though it’s still only 17 degrees outside.

And somehow, everyone convinces themselves the lake will feel “refreshing.”

Growing up, May 2-4 always felt like a shift in energy. Longer evenings. More sunlight. People spending more time outside. You could feel moods changing after a long winter.

Honestly, workplaces aren’t that different this time of year. People start looking ahead to summer vacations, family time, weekends at the lake, golf rounds, camping trips, and a slightly different pace of life.

Good leaders recognize that shift instead of fighting it. I’ve seen leaders try to push harder this time of year, thinking people are becoming distracted.

The stronger leaders do something different. They create energy. They reconnect teams around priorities. They talk about finishing strong before summer. They create flexibility where possible. They recognize that people generally perform better when there’s something positive ahead of them.

Long winters can wear people down. Longer days help. And leadership isn’t just about managing performance. Sometimes it’s about understanding people.

Happy May 2-4 weekend to my fellow Canadians. Even the ones pretending the lake isn’t freezing.
